These stencils I carved using and exacto knife and smoked mulberry paper. I then lacquer a fine silk netting on the back for strength and support. They can last several lifetimes of use. They are used for the Japanese process of Katazome. A cooked rice paste is pushed thru the stencil on to silk fabric. pigment is applied to the places where the fabric is exposed. after several months of curing, the paste is washed out and the design is permanently on the silk. I think the stencils can be an artform in themselves.
