Tapestry - Textile - Batik On Silk Fabric
Description
This is one of my earlier batiks.
There was no planning. I just freely drew and spread dyes.
It is done on silk fabric using procion dyes and wax.
Batik is the process of using wax and dyes to create designs on fabric. Wax is heated in a tool called a tjanting and then passes thru a copper or metal tube on to the fabric. Where the wax is placed, the dye cannot penetrate. I work in layers to create a design. Wax some, Dye some. When the dye touches the fabric, it spreads like water. So the wax creates a border that controls where the dye can go. Salt creates a unique effect as well. When the piece is finished, the wax is removed. I then stretch the silk on foamcore using linen tape.
I use only high quality silk fabric and pure beeswax in my work.
