Artist's Description

I let my black pen just bounce on my paper as we drive down this bumpy dirt road to the remote town of Eagle, AK. The spruce trees were small and stunted. Similarly, in creating this batik, I let the wax batik tool just bounce and squiggle on the silk fabric to outline the trees.

Batik is the process of using wax and dyes to create designs on fabric. Wax is heated in a tool called a tjanting and then passes thru a copper or metal tube on to the fabric. Where the wax is placed, the dye cannot penetrate. I work in layers to create a design. Wax some, Dye some. When the dye touches the fabric, it spreads like water. So the wax creates a border that controls where the dye can go. Silk is such an ethereal medium to work on.
The way the dyes move around and blend in the boundaries created by the wax. Salt creates a unique effect as well. When the piece is finished, the wax is removed. I then stretch the silk on foamcore using linen tape.
