Artist's Description

2013.
Autumn.

Batik is the process of using wax and dyes to create designs on fabric. Wax is heated in a tool called a tjanting and then passes thru a copper or metal tube on to the fabric. Where the wax is placed, the dye cannot penetrate. I work in layers to create a design. Wax some, Dye some. When the dye touches the fabric, it spreads like water. So the wax creates a border that controls where the dye can go. Salt creates a unique effect as well. When the piece is finished, the wax is removed. I then stretch the silk on foamcore using linen tape.
I use only high quality silk fabric and pure beeswax in my work.
Original is for sale. Please contact me for more info.

About Carolyn Doe

Carolyn Doe

Welcome to my art. Please check out my personal website: www.carolyndoe.com I am self taught which only means I just played until I figured something out. My ongoing education in art takes place thru my own passion and pleasure in the exploration of creative processes. Always excited by fiberarts and having been raised by a seamstress, I started working in batik on silk fabric over thirty years ago. Batik has become my voice. When dye touches silk fabric it spreads like crazy. The wax creates a boundary. It is this dance of control/no control that captivates me for hours. Through this ethereal quality, I try to convey the essence of a place and of the creatures who dwell there. SIx years ago I took a class on palette knife...
